Dr Richard Russell

GP Partner - BSc, MB ChB, MRCGP

Having studied at St Andrews and Manchester University, I have gained experience in Zimbabwe and Australia. Whilst initially undertaking training as an Intensivist and in Emergency Medicine in North West England, I recognised the amazing experience of General Practice. I have developed clinical interests in Musculoskeletal Medicine, Men’s Health and Autism amongst many others. I’ve held local leadership roles promoting General Practice to find innovative solutions on behalf of patients. I’ve taken additional training in Equity, Equality and Diversity, along with a lot of reading on communication skills. I’m a trained Medical Hypnotherapist. I have an open minded approach to you and anything in medicine, but always your advocate. Always learning and with enthusiasm to help.

Dr John Wood

GP Partner - MB ChB, MRCGP

After studying Medicine at Manchester University, I graduated in 1998 with initial ambitions of working as either an Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon, or an Orthopaedic Surgeon. I spent several years working in a variety of hospitals across the North-West including 2 ½ years of Surgical training in Blackpool. It is from this experience that I realised my love of patient contact in an out-patient setting and decided to pursue General Practice. I commenced my GP training in Lancaster and qualified in 2005. I then worked as a GP Locum across the South Lakes area before joining The James Cochrane Practice as a Partner in May 2007.

Whilst training, I worked in A&E, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Surgery, Palliative Care and General Medicine. I moved back up to the South Lakes where I completed my GP training in 2012, before joining The James Cochrane Practice as a Partner later that year. My areas of particular medical interest include the care of older people and Dementia.

I was born and raised in Liverpool before studying medicine at Leeds University, where I qualified in 1999. Since then I have trained in Yorkshire and Merseyside before becoming a GP in Liverpool in 2003. There, I co-ordinated the management of lung problems. I moved to Cumbria in late 2017 when I joined the James Cochrane Practice as a partner.

Dr Catherine Munro

GP Partner - MBChB (hons), MRCS, DRCOG, DFSRH, FRCGP

I moved up to Kendal in 2022 having worked as a GP for 15+ years in Stockport. I graduated from the University of Manchester in 1996 and embarked upon a surgical career. Having worked in Urology for 5 years, including doing 2 years of bladder cancer research, I decided to move over to a career in General Practice.

During my time in Stockport and Greater Manchester, I worked in a range of clinical management and transformation roles, as a clinical director and as the chair of the commissioning group in Stockport. I have worked in roles around Personalised Care and to support those experiencing homelessness.  I worked for a few years as a GP with special interest in Urology, working mainly in female urology at that time and have maintained an interest in women’s health.

I am trained to fit coils and implants and am a BMS accredited menopause specialist. I have set up menopause cafes in Kendal and work with some equally passionate colleagues to run regular women’s health talks. I love my role as a GP and am keen to work with patients and their families to support them in the challenges of daily life.

My wife and I moved to Kendal in 2012 because of our passion for rock climbing and cycling. Dr Paula Cherry

Salaried GP - MBChB, MRCGP, MRCS, DFSRH

Originally from Bolton, I trained in Manchester, qualifying in 2003, and completed my GP training in Salford in 2011. I’ve worked all around Manchester, and initially undertook surgical training, including some time working in surgical departments at both Furness General Hospital and Royal Lancaster Infirmary. However, as time went on I felt that perhaps a career in General Practice would be better. I have recently relocated with my family to Cumbria from Manchester, having reached a point in my life where I craved a good view; and given that we often spent much of the Summer travelling up to go walking, camping or festivalling, it made good sense.

Dr Steve Cottam

Salaried GP - MB ChB MA MRCP MRCGP DTM & H

I grew up in Morecambe and studied Medicine at the University of Birmingham. I worked in the West Midlands then in General Medicine in Liverpool and in Haematology in Leeds and Bradford before training in General Practice in North Lincolnshire.

I worked for nearly 25 years as a GP Partner in a Practice in the Fylde, leaving to work as a Medical Advisor for an international Christian organization in its Philippines field. Because of the COVID pandemic we had to relocate back to the UK and I am now working as a Sessional GP in South Lakes, working some out of hours shifts for CHoC, at Kendal and Barrow and working remotely as a Medical Adviser. I started working at James Cochrane Practice as a locum in 2021 and stayed on as a Salaried GP.

My main professional interests are in General Internal Medicine, Care of the Elderly and Mental Health Care. I do joint and soft tissue injections.

Outside work, I enjoy reading, cooking, visiting gardens and historic places, history, birdwatching, and travel. I am an avid supporter of Blackburn Rovers (sometimes enjoyable, more often not). I am an active member of Caton Baptist Church.
