5 Year Health Check 40 to 74

What is it?

Our 5 Year Health Check 40 to 74 appointments are for NHS Health Checks. This is a free check-up of your overall health. it can tell you whether you're at higher risk of getting certain health problems, such as:

During the check-up you'll discuss how to reduce your risk of these conditions.

If you’re aged over 65, you’ll also be told about symptoms of dementia to look out for.

Who can have an NHS Health Check?

The NHS Health Check is offered once every 5 years to people who are aged between 40 and 74 who do not have a pre-existing health condition. Pre-existing health conditions are listed below, if you have one of these you will have a relevant annual health check and thus do not require an NHS Health Check. 

  • heart disease
  • chronic kidney disease
  • diabetes
  • high blood pressure (hypertension)
  • atrial fibrillation
  • transient ischaemic attack
  • inherited high cholesterol (familial hypercholesterolemia)
  • heart failure
  • peripheral arterial disease
  • stroke
  • currently being prescribed statins to lower cholesterol
  • previous checks have found that you have a 20% or higher risk of getting cardiovascular disease over the next 10 years

What to expect from your NHS Health Check

The appointment will be around 15-20 minutes with one of our nursing team. They will do some straightforward health tests such as taking your blood pressure, drawing some blood and recording your height and weight. Alongside this they will ask you some questions regarding your family’s medical history and your lifestyle.

DO BOOK IF ALL OF THE FOLLOWING APPLY:

 You are aged 40 to 74.

✓ You do not have any pre-existing health conditions (see list above).

✓ You have not had an NHS Health Check in the past 5 years.

 

DO NOT BOOK IF ANY OF THE FOLLOWING APPLY:

 You have a pre-existing health condition.

⊘ You are aged under 40 or over 75.

⊘ You have had an NHS Health Check is the last 5 years.

 You are having symptoms or feel unwell and want to discuss these with a doctor. If this is the case, please contact the practice to book an appointment with a clinician.
